On 12th January 2017, New Acropolis Cultural Organization hosted a panel discussion in association with Indian Express, titled “Empowering Real Change”, at the Express Gallery (Nariman Point, Mumbai). The esteemed panelists included educationist and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk (Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh), philanthropist Zarina Screwvala (Swades Foundation), and philosopher Yaron Barzilay (National Director of New Acropolis Cultural Organization). With over 150 guests in attendance, the panelists shed light on the need for sustainable change in society, beyond immediate quick fixes that fail to leave a lasting mark, causing hopelessness or despair.
The collective investigation demonstrated that the “Post-truth” world (2016 Word of the Year, Oxford Dictionary), causes the inability of individuals to dream and aspire for a better tomorrow. It emerged that our challenges could be addressed by redefining how society imparts education. And that ultimately, the responsibility lies with the individual – to choose to participate in change. Reviving this sense of individual empowerment to actively contribute to society, and to the environment, is an imperative ingredient for real change.
