Kathak stories with Urja Desai

On 26th August 2017, 54 members and friends of New Acropolis attended a Kathak performance by Urja Desai Thakore. Urja Desai has studied for over 20 years with India’s internationally acclaimed Kathak guru and choreographer Kumudini Lakhia. She has also received her bachelors’ degree in Kathak dance from Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya.

Urja Desai through narratives including one piece related to Kabir choreographed herself, emphasized the practice of Abhinay (Facial Expression) in the Kathak dance form. Citing the etymology of the name “Kathaka” to “he who tells a story” she went on to demonstrate the relationship of the dance and storytelling through two energetic and graceful performances.

This was also the first event of the Friends of New Acropolis Details on http://acropolis.org.in/friends
