What better way to mark Environment day – Vanamahotsava – than to have a meaningful engagement with plants and children! Volunteers of New Acropolis, Bangalore conducted a hands-on educational workshop on 3rd June, 2017, for the children from class III to class VII of Vidya Amrutha School, Byappanahalli. The theme of the workshop was Creating an Upcycled garden. 11 volunteers and 15 children worked in groups to create planters out of pre-used Plastic bottles, Glass bottles and Jerry cans. The children promptly unleashed their creativity to add colour and decorations to their new creations, before planting saplings in each of them. This was followed by the children creating a “Tree of Wisdom” where each leaf spoke of a lesson / inspiration they could derive from observing and working with plants, or sent them on a simple quest involving plants, trees, flowers and leaves – for the learning and exploration to continue!
Building a healthy relationship with the environment is essential for a harmonious way of life. And as the future of humanity, children hold the key to carrying the torch forward. As volunteers walked out fulfilled and inspired, our hope is that we have planted the seeds of ecology and love for nature in the children. Happy Vanamahotsava!
