About the artist

Raam Kumar is a Kalaripayatt performer and instructor from Kerala. He is also a contemporary dancer, choreographer and physical theatre performer for over 18 years. He is the great-grandson of Veera Shree C. V. Narayanan Nair, who re-established Kalaripayatt – the traditional martial art of Kerala. And the grandson of C. V. Govindan Kutty Nair, the founder of CVN Kalari Sangham and Kerala Kalaripayatt Association.

CVN Kalari, Trivandrum, was established in 1956, coinciding with the formation of the state of Kerala. This pioneering institution was the first traditional school offering training in northern-style Kalaripayatt in southern Kerala. During the last six decades, it has pioneered many schools of thought and practices and guided the evolution of the tradition of Kalaripayatt.
