On  January 25, 2024, New Acropolis Pune Branch hosted a thought-provoking talk “Reflecting on the Meaning of Life – The Socratic Way”. The event, attended by 60 participants, explored the question of the Meaning of Life through exploring the ideas attributed to Socrates, a Greek Philosopher of repute.

The speaker began by giving an example of the Socratic method(called the maieutic method), a unique way of questioning meant to extract knowledge through carefully crafted questions. The exploration revealed that true meaning of life might stem from fulfilling a greater purpose.

Drawing from the Greek view of the human constitution, the speaker emphasized the unique power of the human mind, or ‘psyche,’ urging that we must use our intelligence to discern what is meaningful.

The talk delved into Socrates’ life, contrasting him with sophists (who were known for their ability to speak and argue in public debates), and illustrating how the Socratic way was rooted in dialogue and introspection. Through this, the speaker highlighted the importance of examining one’s life through personal reflection—a process that can bring clarity and guide actions aligned with deeper convictions.

The speaker concluded by sharing that while the meaning of life remains a mystery and philosophy—a love for wisdom—serves as a tool to guide individuals toward more meaningful, harmonious living.
