On 30th January 2021, the Culture Circle presented by New Acropolis, hosted Hindustani classical singer and educator Tara Kini at an event titled “Transcending the Grammar of Music”
Through the talk Tara explained the framework that art forms adhere to and the need of concentration and practice in the pursuit such art forms. She also conducted a practical exercise where the participants under her guidance were able to create a sequences of music with just three notes, Sa, Re, Ga, demonstrating concepts of pitch, speed of notes, and rhythm. Tara also performed rendition of Raag Yaman, a raga comprising of all 7 notes.
Tara is the founder director of a music collective Sunaad, which has presented over eighty shows helping demystify classical music. As a singer Tara is an explorer of creative combinations and permutations in music. She is an independent consultant in Education and Music and works with several reputed institutions all over India. She has trained intensively in Hindustani classical music for over 5 decades, under various tutelage including, Smt Lalith Rao and the Gundecha Brothers. She has helped set up a school of Dhrupad in Bengaluru, called the Dhrupad Sankula, affiliated to the Dhrupad Sansthan, Bhopal. She has taught a course on the Music and Religion of South Asia in Stanford University and presented research papers on music and education in Sheffield and Helsinki.
