On the 29th of October 2023, New Acropolis Culture Circle hosted a musical performance at the main center in Colaba. The stage was graced by Chandana Bala Kalyan, a singer whose training in the classical Carnatic tradition brought a unique vibrancy to the event. Beyond her vocal prowess, Chandana offered profound insights into her learnings of how music can serve as a pathway to becoming the best versions of ourselves.
Chandana commenced her performance with a stirring Carnatic rendition followed by an exploration of how she had used her Carnatic foundation as a springboard to experiment with genres as diverse Folk, Qawwali, Hindustani Classical, as well as the intricate world of jazz. She seamlessly integrated Folk music from several parts of India and a popular Jazz piece using her Carnatic heritage, demonstrating her musical versatility and creativity.
Chandana generously shared her learnings of what she called “the keys of music”, demonstrating concepts such as “Swara” representing notes on a tonal graph, “Gamaka,” the intricate connection between two notes that can be executed in a variety of styles, “Laya,” or rhythm, and finally, “Bhava” that allows one to connect with the soul through a tapestry of emotions.
Chandana’s performance was a platform for her to convey the practical philosophical lessons that music imparts. Drawing from her own life experiences, she spoke on the significance of discipline and constancy, highlighting how these attributes were cultivated through the ‘riyaaz’ or daily practice inculcated in her by her first guru, her father. Moreover, she emphasized the importance of leading a balanced life – giving importance to one’s art, one’s family, and even to one’s own financial independence, the idea being never to neglect any aspect of life. She spoke of the importance of “stepping back” and allowing others to shine, just like the harmonious synergy found in an orchestra, where each instrument and artist play their unique roles to bring the music to life.
The evening was a beautiful blend of music, education, and inspiration, reminding us that music transcends mere entertainment; it serves as a profound teacher, guiding us towards finding our rightful place in the symphony of life.
