New Acropolis (Main Centre) marked World Oceans Day on 9th June 2019, with yet another session of the ongoing mangroves cleaning project that began in 2017. This most recent activity was promoted as “Save Mangroves, Save the Ocean” and was conducted with the active support of BMC A Ward.
Despite the pre-monsoon heat and humidity, 30 volunteers worked together to remove washed up fabric, plastic and fishing nets entangled among the roots and branches of the mangroves, stifling their growth.
Within three hours, and the team collected 70 bags of garbage, weighing approximately 500kgs. This activity also provided an opportunity to investigate the ecological importance of the mangroves both, to the ocean and to man.
