Frequently Asked Questions

At New Acropolis, we attempt to revive the true meaning of “Philosophy”, which literally translates to “love for wisdom”. Rather than offering an intellectual or informational approach of studying various philosophical theories, our emphasis is on a practical philosophy, designed to not only empower students to become acquainted with the wisdom of past philosophers and explore their relevance for us today, but more importantly, to adopt a philosophical spirit within their own lives.  Therefore, no prior knowledge of philosophy is required in order to join the course. This course is for anyone interested in developing a philosophical approach to daily living, for someone who is looking to impact change in a meaningful way.

At New Acropolis, we believe Philosophy is a life-long pursuit, something that can enrich all facets of our lives, as it has the potential to bring about a fundamental change in how we view ourselves, the world we live in, and our role in it. Therefore a 20-week course is really only an introduction to learning to live with the adventurous spirit of a Philosopher! Classes take place once a week for two hours, across 20 weeks, usually at our centres or branches in Mumbai (Colaba) and Pune. The upcoming Course will be conducted in-person at our Centre to enable a practical and interactive experience (circumstances permitting). The course also includes a simple mid-term and end-of-course assessment to ensure students are able to grasp concepts adequately. The instructor stays in touch with students beyond the weekly classes to ensure learning and application beyond the classroom setting, because Philosophy, after all, is meant to be lived!

The instructors of the course are first and foremost students of philosophy, and have studied with New Acropolis for several years. More importantly, instructors make efforts to imbibe and live the wisdom they have encountered through their classes through their own direct experience. Instructors undergo a one-year Instructor training program, followed by taking on a role as assistant-teacher. All instructors conduct classes on a voluntary bases, keeping with the ethos of a School of Philosophy.

New Acropolis is a completely volunteer run organisation – all classes and activities, including the maintenance of our centres and branches are managed and run by our member-volunteers. While we are a not-for-profit organisation, however, we do need to charge a basic fee to cover our costs to maintain our centres and branches. We do offer 15% discounts for students or senior citizens, as needed. Additionally, if there is genuine financial constraint for a potential student, we are as an exception, open to consider a discounted rate on a case-by-case basis.

The Living Philosophy Course is the foundational introductory course offered by New Acropolis for any seeker of wisdom. However, this course is just the beginning of a potentially life long journey of bringing a philosophical approach to daily living. Upon successful completion of this course, students may choose to continue with the advanced studies program as members of the organisation. Here, the engagement goes beyond weekly classes, to a framework that promotes practicing values and principles discussed in the classrooms through action and volunteering.
