On 26 March 2022, Dr Farokh Udwadia, one of the city’s leading Physicians shared his views on medicine in an evening titled My Thoughts on Medicine, organised by the New Acropolis Culture Circle. Dr Udwadia shared his views on why he believed the study of arts, culture, music, painting and other humanities was essential to help a physician by providing a more holistic view that would help them in their practice of medicine. He also shared the essential qualities that make a good Physician, focusing on the quote by Hermann Nothnagel “only a good man can be a great physician”  outlining a few essential qualities such as generosity, beneficence, equanimity and judgement, besides medical competence in their field.

Dr Udwadia also took the time to answer questions from the audience, using examples from his professional career of over 50 plus years to share his perspective.

Dr Farokh Udwadia completed his MMBS from Mumbai University and is Consultant and Director in charge of the Critical Care Unit of Breach Candy Hospital besides being affiliated in various capacities with several other medical institutions. He has contributed to various international and national journals and papers also authoring books, one of which Tabiyat – Medicine and healing in India is a collection of nine thought-provoking essays on various fields influenced by and impacting medicine.

Besides several awards,  he was bestowed with the Padma Bhushan by the Indian Government in 1987.
