All the world’s a stage and all men and women are merely players who have different parts and acts – is a message from William Shakespeare’s work “As you like it”

On 1st July 2017, New Acropolis main center in Colaba explored the significance of theatre through a talk titled – Theatre beyond entertainment. The talk explored the historical purpose of theatre to convey a message that transcends beyond just entertainment. Ancient theatre was also used as a tool to communicate, educate and transform the intended audience even if for a very brief period. Using the example of the mystery theatre of ancient Greece it was explained how the audience played an active role, a concept reflected through the meaning of the word Theatre – i.e active observation. Attendees also participated in a fun activity of creating a small script keeping in mind a philosophical message.

The Talk concluded by proposing how in real life we too wear many different masks in the roles we play. If we can recognize our true purpose in life, then just like a good theatre actor we too can play our part doing it justice.
