On Sunday, 13th January 2019, New Acropolis (Khar Branch) continued the ongoing project of cleaning Mumbai’s mangroves at Carter Road (Bandra), with a team of volunteers comprising members and their friends, as well as valuable support from the garbage collection services of BMC.

Setting off early, the work began by identifying four trees, deeply entangled in plastic, and in need of cleaning. The volunteers were divided into three groups and by the end of the 3 hour session, a large quantity of debris and garbage had been removed – enough to fill a full BMC truck!

The state of the mangroves demonstrates how disconnected urban lifestyles have become from nature. And participants expressed the reflection that perhaps the garbage is a manifestation of the chaos we experience within ourselves. Hence the cleaning activity was an opportunity to look within, and disentangle internal knots, as we forge ahead on our quest for meaning in life.
