On Saturday 13th April 2019, Friends of New Acropolis hosted an interactive talk at the Colaba Centre titled “Wisdom in Simplicity: Exploring Japanese Haiku Poetry”.

It was proposed that Haiku poetry, like many classical art forms, invites the author to see and live with more depth and sensitivity. Haiku is characterized by brevity, respect for nature, and a keen sense of the present moment, and it becomes a medium through which the poet practices the need to let go of the un-essential, in order to grasp the essential.

Written in the present tense, avoiding use of personal pronouns, Haiku disallows a subjectivity. Many verses depict the simple day-to-day events of life through the extraordinary expression of Life and Nature.

The talk was followed by participants trying their own hand at writing their own verses.
